The steering system is responsible for converting any turn of the steering wheel into movement of the front wheels, with precision and smoothness. Today, this is added to the mission of helping the driver to reduce his effort when turning the wheel, through a hydraulic system that does most of the work necessary to turn the steering wheel.
As with any other vehicle system, there are certain points that can be taken into account to keep the steering elements in good condition:
• Periodically check each of the elements of the steering system. In this regard, the elements most used in the steering bar are the steering ends, the steering rack and the guide bushings of the bar.
• Next, in the steering column it is important to check the steering pinion.
• In addition, in the hydraulic power steering system, it is necessary to periodically check if the pump pressure is correct and if there are no leaks in the circuit.
• Check that the steering elements (whether mechanical or assisted) work correctly. This task will be carried out with the car in motion. Once this is done, if necessary we will have to adjust the steering alignment and balance the tires.
• A lack of fluid considerably damages the steering system. This also occurs with poor pressure or excessive wear of the tires, and with the poor condition of the shock absorbers.
• It is always advisable to visit a trusted workshop when the following problems are detected: the steering becomes hard, unstable or if noises are made when using any element of this system.
